UK Automotive Sector

The UK automotive industry is a global leader in vehicle production, innovation and engineering with a strong supply chain, vibrant connected and automated mobility sector and home to some of the most famous brands in the world.

The sector produces a diverse range of products – including cars, vans, trucks, buses, taxis and components – many of which built for export, with vehicles shipped to over 140 countries.

It contributes significantly to the British economy and net zero goals, generating £92 billion in turnover, £25 billion in value added and invests £5 billion in R&D annually. As an industry it employs nearly 800,000 people, many in high-skilled, well paid roles offering wages above the national average and in regions outside London and the South-East.

Industry-government collaboration through the Automotive Council has been vital to this success, most recently with launch of the UK’s Modern Industrial Strategy Advanced Manufacturing Sector Plan.

This includes a dedicated £4 billion funding programme for the UK automotive sector over the next decade – DRIVE 35 – which will boost growth across the industry and set it on the path to produce 1.3 million vehicles by 2035.
